In the early 1800's, German forester Karl Freiherr Drais von Sauerbronn invented a simple, hand-powered drive mechanism. Although his invention was replaced by more advanced devices, the name "Draisine" is still used in many languages to refer to small, self-propelled rail vehicles, like handcars. On this classic LGB model, a concealed motor does all the work. But Gustav, our veteran track inspector, still pumps furiously to carry his load of tools and oil down the track.
